The Latino community has a "Sweet Sixteen" party.  Jewish Americans perform a Bat Mitzvah.  But twenty first century main stream American culture, generally doesn't celebrate a young girl's passage into womanhood.  In fact, menarche, the onset of menstruation, is often treated as a shameful secret. 
As our twin grand daughters came of age, my wife suggested that we quietly celebrate this time with a commemorative pendant for each child as she starts to become a woman.
